Discover 5 Years Of Jazz Piano Secrets In A Single Afternoon

Learning Jazz piano on your own is daunting…

There’s so much information on the internet…

You bounce around between topics…

practicing-without-focus-2

You finish watching one video – then you’re faced with 10 more suggested videos…

When you DO find a piece of gold advice – it’s easily lost – if your browser crashes…

And after all of this, you never really know if you can trust the information – afterall, who wrote it?

This is what I experienced when I first tried to learn jazz piano on my own.

My first introduction to jazz was at age 17.

I’d been taking classical piano lessons for 10 years, and one night I attended a Wynton Marsalis jazz concert…

In fact I even got to sit in on the pre-concert rehearsal, where I noticed the jazz pianist – a young african american guy, wearing a baggy flannel shirt, lumberjack style boots, and a pencil behind his ear.

I listened to him try out chords between takes, and pencil in notes to his sheet music.

That night I became a different person.

I was instantly obsessed with jazz – and the next day, I went to the school computer lab on my lunch break, and again after school – to search for jazz piano advice.

This became a habit – and I did this every day for the next 6 months:

I downloaded MIDI files from jazz forums…

I searched for jazz album covers, and zoomed in 500% so I could see what voicing the pianist was playing…

And I bought jazz piano sheet music books – but was always dissapointed when they arrived and I opened the book to see simple 4 note chord voicings – which even early on I knew were not authentic jazz chords.

During this time I was TRULY inspired…

I had this sense of urgency – I had to learn everything there was to know about jazz.

But after 6 months of trying to figure it out on my own – I didn’t have much to show for it…

I had a few nice chord voicings…

A few nice licks…

But I didn’t understand how jazz worked.

If I opened a real book – I was at a loss as for what to do with the chord symbols.

I didn’t know how to make my own arrangement of a song.

Let alone, what scales to play for an improv.r how to reharmonize, or add passing chords…

I didn’t ‘get it’ yet.

All in all – I spent several hundred hours doing this, and it didn’t get me anywhere close to where I wanted to go.

Then My Breakthrough Happened

But everything changed when I found a jazz piano teacher living near me.Terry Seabrook in Brighton.

An amazing teacher called Terry Seabrook, in Brighton.

I started meeting with him every 2 weeks, for an epic one hour lesson (although I always liked that he’d go over by 20 minutes!)

And finally the pieces started falling into place – because Terry taught me everything from the ground up:

Lesson 1: 7th chords. We ingrained the 4 main types of chord – and applied them to 3 jazz songs.

Lesson 2: 7th chords in inversion. I learned how to change chords while keeping my left hand in the same place – and applied them to the same 3 songs.

Lesson 3: Rootless chord voicings – playing up to the 9th and 13th. Again, applied these new voicings to the same 3 songs.

Lesson 4: The Lydian-Dominant scale – how to add a #11 color to V7 chords. Ingrained this using the same 3 songs.

…And each week, he took me one step further.

Finally, I was able to fill in the gaps to my jazz knowledge – and I gained a solid understanding and confidence in jazz harmony – once and for all.

In my first 12 lessons with Terry – I had developed a deep confidence and understanding of jazz:

  • I could open a real book and play an authentic performance to any jazz song.
  • I could reharmonize songs – and knew how to tweak the melody to fit with my new chords
  • I could compose my own jazz songs – which I started doing, both for solo piano – and for the big band I played in at university

I finally got out of the rut I’d been stuck in – from trying to figure out everything myself on the internet.

If I’d continued learning on my own, finding bits and pieces from separate websites, whatever showed up that week – I’d never have had my jazz piano breakthrough.

And eventually, my passion for jazz would have burned out.

I’d have got frustrated – and in the long run, I would have given up.

Following My Breakthrough

After studying with Terry – I went on to have a lot of success in music.

The sort of success that wouldn’t have come from trying to do everything on my own.

I gained my undergrad, and masters degrees in music.

I maintained my spot as the only jazz pianist in our college big band – despite much competition for the spot.

I composed dozens of my own jazz compositions – both for solo piano and for big band.

And when I started posting tutorial videos to YouTube, my channel quickly grew to become the leading jazz piano channel on YouTube – with over 140,000 subs to date.

My goal is simple – to help anyone who has a passion for jazz – to succeed and master this skill – just like I did.

But after 7 years of doing this, I’ve learned something:

Passion Doesn’t Last Forever

I have to get as much information across as I can – quickly – WHILE a subscriber is fired up and passionate about jazz…

This ‘obsession window’ doesn’t last forever…

One of the saddest things for me is when I catch up with a subscriber who I knew was fired up about learning jazz piano – only to find that they’re now onto the next thing, and that they didn’t experience a complete jazz piano breakthrough.

Basically – they got frustrated and gave up.

I can only teach so much through isolated YouTube videos. Ultimately, a lot of my free videos end up being unrelated pieces in the puzzle – and it’s hard for me to recreate the solid foundation that I experienced.

So that’s when I decided to get serious – and to write a complete book on jazz piano.

JAZZ THEORY EXPLAINED READER COMMENTS:

Ray HuckellRay Huckell, (Toronto): “When I decided to learn jazz piano 5 years ago, I searched high and low for a competent teacher who could lead me along the trail of developing a JAZZ SOUND. I lucked in to Julian Bradley on YouTube, watched every video he presented, made copious notes and went through the horrors of “oops, which video did he use to show his favorite major 7th voicing”. All of that is in the past as Julian has now published the most understandable explanation of the complexities of Jazz Piano and Theory. Terrific and easy to understand, what every visitor to your videos is praying for – a true GOLDMINE!”.

Steve Schneider, (US): “I am incredibly impressed with your easy clarity, your ability to convey complex material in an accessible and engaging manner, and your ability to focus on what’s really important in a logical fashion. I purchased your Jazz Theory Explained ebook and within 5 minutes knew that it was exactly what I’ve been looking for for years. Thanks for making all your hard work so accessible.”

Mike Le, California: “I bought your ebook and loved it! So much valuable information with detailed explanation. Your book is worth every penny!!!”

Roger Price, Venice, California: “I waited weeks before writing this email, because I wanted to see if your jazz theory book would clear up years of jazz theory confusion and frustration for me. Well, I’m happy to report that it has! After reading your book from cover to cover, I’m now able to practice “Dancing With You” on my piano […] Thank you so much!”

Ed Marsh, Oakland, California: “Hey Julian, The book is fantastic! I have been taking ‘expensive’ Jazz Piano Lessons for almost three years. My technique has improved and I’m enjoying the lessons, BUT I gained tons of ‘understanding’ from just reviewing, what I thought I understood and reading your e-book. Keep the e-books coming! Thanks, Ed”

_______

earning Jazz piano on your own is frustrating. There’s so much information on the internet and you don’t know what order to practice things in.

It’s overwhelming because the internet gives you ALL of the information at once – rather than showing you a clear path. You watch one video, and then have 10 other suggested videos thrown at you – all of which look just as important.

When I started learning jazz piano I looked to the internet also. I found some cool things here and there, but there was no core to what I was learning. Just random details scattered about. It never gave me confidence, and in fact, it took away my confidence because I felt like there were a million things that I should be practicing.

At the piano I’d jump between different things – 5 minutes on improv, 5 minutes on walking basslines, and so on. But I never progressed. Most of my time was wasted TRANSITIONING between each area, rather than ever mastering one thing.

practicing-without-focus-2

However, everything changed for me when I started meeting with a jazz piano teacher in person. For the first time I was given just ONE thing to focus on (left hand voicings). Then we’d meet again and I’d be given the next thing to focus on (playing voicings in inversion). At the next lesson we’d tackle the next thing (Tritone Substitution), and so on.

The feeling of overwhelm disappeared and I found myself enjoying the learning process. I had just one teacher showing me the way, and I only had to focus on one thing at a time.

When I started learning through one source I improved very quickly. The bulk of my progress happened in just four months, and in less than two years I became completely confident in my jazz piano playing. We’d covered everything from the ground up and I’d filled in all gaps to my knowledge.

My name’s Julian Bradley. I’m now a professional jazz pianist and educator, with a masters degree in music.

I realize how lucky I was to have one person showing me the way, and now I want to help you achieve the same goal.
